Tips to Relieve Phone Anxiety

May 12, 2020Emma RobsonMental HealthNo comments

A few of us (myself included) have developed a bit of nervous energy around making phone calls. Not the greatest challenge to have in a world where call is our main form of communication with loved ones!

I’m composed a few little tips that help me to deal with the anxiety I get around phone calls, making this time a little bit easier for myself (and hopefully you too!).

  1. Visualisation – Take a moment before you place the call to visualise how you’d like it to go. Picture yourself laughing and imagine the feeling of love you’ll get from catching up with a chat.
  2. Prepare – If there’s something in particular you want to talk about, jot down a few little notes to help keep your head clear. If the thought of forgetting what to say makes you nervous, think of a few subjects you’d love to talk about that you can recall if this happens!
  3. Smile – Before you make/answer a phone call, give yourself a big smile. Smiling can help you to feel positive and to relax, getting rid of that anxious energy!
  4. Check ahead – Check with the recipient if you’ve called at a good time, or schedule a call in ahead. This will stop you feeling concerned that you’ve interrupted and give them a chance to call back if it’s inconvenient for them.
  5. Don’t feel pressured – Don’t feel like a phone call? Don’t worry about it! From time to time it’s completely okay to let your phone go to answer phone and ring the caller back at a time when you feel a little better!

Hopefully these tips help to minimise phone anxiety and bring joy.

If phone anxiety is effecting other areas of your life, remember to talk to your GP or a healthcare professional for advice and support.
